Toured with David Byrne. He built a life as a working artist in a city that doesn’t make it easy.

But this conversation isn’t really about that. It’s about a term Steve coined for himself in recovery—GOB. Not what you’re thinking. It stands for something smaller, and at the same time, something bigger: Get Out of Bed. The actual, daily discipline behind a life that had to be rebuilt more than once.

I’ve known Steve since 2003. I’ve seen him lose. I’ve seen him win. In this portrait, we talk about all of it—the music, faith, family, what it meant to grow up gay in America in the late 1950s and 60s, and what drug addiction gave him before it took far more than he expected.

This is a conversation about what actually carries you through the hardest years. Not the version that sounds good. The real one.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_icon type=”fontawesome” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-solid fa-podcast” size=”lg” align=”center” custom_color=”#000000″ background_style=”rounded” css_animation=”bounceIn” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fpodcasts.apple.com%2Fde%2Fpodcast%2Fportraits-by-anselm%2Fid6818627347|target:_blank|” custom_background_color=”#00000000″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_icon type=”fontawesome” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-brands fa-spotify” size=”lg” align=”center” custom_color=”#000000″ background_style=”rounded” css_animation=”bounceIn” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fopen.spotify.com%2Fshow%2F54I2JsPeCj19KMtWh10B8W%3Fsi%3D1cab62bfbb6743ec|target:_blank|” custom_background_color=”#00000000″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_icon type=”fontawesome” icon_fontawesome=”fa fa-brands fa-youtube” size=”lg” align=”center” custom_color=”#000000″ background_style=”rounded” css_animation=”bounceIn” link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2F%40portraitsbyanselm|target:_blank|” custom_background_color=”#00000000″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Hinweis: Diese Episode behandelt die Themen psychische Gesundheit, Depression, Sucht, Drogenabhängigkeit und Suizid.
